Good Tidings We Bring: The Family History of Santa and Friends

1 December 2022 - 8 January 2023

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Everyone is in a festive mood, there are lots of holiday films available, and drinking cocoa in front of a fire is at the top of everyone's list of things to do. The R.W. Norton Art Gallery is joining in on the family fun with its new exhibition, Good Tidings We Bring: The Family History of Santa and Friends. Discover the origins of well-known Christmas favorites like Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and Frosty the Snowman. Uncover the history of Santa's elves, and learn how a ballet about a toy soldier evolved into one of the most well-known Christmas productions ever! There is something for everyone as we explore the world of Santa and friends.

The Man Behind the Beard: The Life & Times of Santa Claus

1 December 2022 - 8 January 2023

Any kid can tell you where Santa Claus is from—the North Pole, but his historical journey is even longer and more fantastical than his annual, one-night circumnavigation of the globe. The Santa Claus we know today has gone by many names: Saint Nicholas, Kris Kringle, and Father Christmas. The jolly old “elf” is a legendary figure and is seen all over the world as the traditional patron of Christmas, delivering gifts to all the good boys and girls. The big man in red's origin can be traced all the way back to the third century, when Saint Nicholas walked the earth and became the patron saint of children. As we journey through the centuries that have come and gone, from sainthood to shopping malls, Santa’s famous image and legend has continued to be shaped and molded in new ways and iterations. Will he always adapt to fit his times?

Reel Adventures: Rear Window Trivia Night

Friday | 13 January 2023 | 5:30-8:00 PM

Do you like movies? Do you like exploring behind the scenes and learning the nuts and bolts of movie making? If so, please join us for Reel Adventures: Rear Window Trivia Night! It’s like a book club, but MUCH better! Along with good fun, food, and drink, there will be prizes awarded for trivia winners, best costume, and more.

It works like this: We pick a movie that is either available free of charge, or at minimal cost, on one or more digital platforms. You watch this movie in the comfort of your own home, and then we meet at the museum for a discussion led by film expert and director Jeffrey Goodman, intermixed with trivia and games.

This is a BYOB evening, so please feel free to bring your favorite spirits and mixers. In addition, we will be providing complimentary water, soft drinks, a signature-themed cocktail (alcoholic and non-alcoholic available), and light hors d’oeuvres, but you are encouraged to bring whatever snacks strike your fancy.

The film is Rear Window (1954), a mystery thriller directed by Alfred Hitchcock and written by John Michael Hayes. It stars James Stewart, Grace Kelly, Wendell Corey, Thelma Ritter, and Raymond Burr. This film is considered by many filmgoers, critics, and scholars to be one of Hitchcock's best and one of the greatest films ever made.

Rear Window is available on Peacock for FREE and on YouTube, Apple TV, Vudu, and Amazon Prime for $3.99.So, we look forward to seeing you!
